It is recommended that women between the ages of 25-50 have a smear every 3 years and between 50-65 every 5 years, to detect easily treatable changes in the neck of the womb to prevent cancer developing. Invitations are sent to all patients in these groups who are then notified by letter of the result. This may take several weeks.
